1. Tooth Decay

Wondering what the #1 oral care issue is???? Yep. Tooth decay. We commonly say cavities! & unfortunately about 90% of us have had one!

How does it happen?

Tooth decay (cavities) happen when bacteria forms a film, called plaque, on the surface of teeth. That bacteria produces acids from the sugars in food. The acids eat away at and permanently damage the enamel, or outer layer, of the tooth. The acids then start working on the softer layers beneath the enamel (dentin).

This assault on your teeth is what leads to cavities. This process causes toothaches and tooth sensitivity. Eating and drinking can go from your favorite pass time to your most hated experience!

Other symptoms of tooth decay may include:

  • Bad breath
  • Black or brown spots on your teeth
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth

Other helpful tips:

  • Avoid sugary, acidic foods. And when you do eat them, follow up immediately with mouth cleansing.
  • Friends don’t let friends go to bed with dirty teeth! This is a prime time for alllll of the decay to happen! Brush every night before bed no matter what!
  • Also, get regular checkups from your dentist to have the plaque scraped from your teeth.

Did it get a little Serious?

It’s time to see your dentist boo! Regular dental checkins can help prevent it from getting bad unnoticed, and your dentist can tell you if you need further dental procedures. They may recommend fillings, crowns, or a root canal.

2. Gum Disease

Bleeding of the gums . . . yeah that’s not the look I think you were going for! Gum tenderness and bleeding are all signs of Gingivitis! It’s the early stage and mild form of gum (periodontal) disease. It’s mostly caused by plaque build up on the teeth. You can have gums that are red, swollen, and bleed easily. Bad breath and sensitive teeth can also be symptoms that cause hurt when you chew.

How did this happen, sway?

You been skipping steps! That’s what happened! I know life gets hectics and sometimes you just want to sit still or go to sleep ASAP! But the time you think you’re saving now, you’re going to have to repay x10 later in teh dentist chair. So not only are you going to be sacrificing time, you’re going to feel it in them pockets too!

A few other factors that can cause gum disease are tobacco use, pregnancy, and diabetes.

It can be a sneaky . . .

Gingivitis can be painless! Yep, it sure can. Making sure you maintain good oral hygiene, combined with regular dental checkups will help you stay informed!

Ooooo things just got serious . . . Don’t let your gum disease turn into the more serious form, Periodontitis.

When you fail to keep a regular oral care routine, gingivitis can become a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis. This is when pockets in the gum become infected. This can damage the bone and tissue that hold the teeth, as these, too, become infected.

So you want to keep playing with your oral care, huh?

Well, if left untreated . . .ya mouth is in trouble!

  • Shrinking and receding gums
  • Loose permanent teeth
  • A change in bite
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Persistent bad breath

Even worse, periodontitis can trigger an inflammatory response throughout your body! Yikes. Yeah . . . you don’t want this happening!

When you get to this point, your dentist may recommend antibiotics to treat the infection or a refer you to a gum disease specialist.

Okay sis-how do I make it go awayyyyy!
